This week is the end of the regular season for baseball. But as this issue of the HUB goes to press, it’s unclear if the Blue Devils will make it to playoffs. Davis High’s varsity team is currently in fifth in the competitive Delta League with the Devils (8-7) behind Elk Grove, the team they will play their remaining games against.
Key players like junior Jackson Moore and senior Houston McCray, who play crucial roles as a pitcher and outfielder/shortstop respectively, are confident in the team’s abilities.
“At the start of the season, we knew we had the talent to compete,” Moore said.
“Every game is an opportunity to improve and showcase what we’re capable of,” McCray said. “I think we’re ready to push ourselves to secure a playoff spot.”
The Delta League is not a walk in the ballpark, as Franklin, the number one ranked team in the league, is boasting a 13-2 league record.
“With each game, we’re learning and growing together,” the team’s catcher Eli Burnham said.
The community’s support has also played a crucial role, fueling the team’s drive.
Parents and supporters are eagerly anticipating the remaining games of the season, knowing that every pitch could have a significant impact on the team’s playoff aspirations.
“Having our friends and families at the games is super supportive and it’s a blessing to have them out at the games,” McCray said. “We’re all thankful for everyone coming out.”
Beyond the players’ individual contributions, the team’s cohesion and teamwork have been key factors in the Blue Devils’ season so far.
Ethan Guevin, the head varsity coach, coaches with a teamwork mindset and emphasizes the importance of resilience and teamwork in the face of challenges.
“Baseball is not just about individual talent; it’s about how well we come together as a team,” Guevin said. “We’ve faced tough opponents, but every game has been a learning experience. Our focus is not just on winning games but on growing stronger with each challenge we encounter.”
As the Devils continue their journey in the DeltaLeague, the team remains focused on maintaining their momentum, overcoming challenges in their pursuit of postseason success.
“Coach Guevin has been a guiding force for us,” Burnham said “His belief in our abilities helps us stay focused on our goals. We’re grateful to have such a dedicated coach who pushes us to do our best.”
