On May 1, UC Davis students, staff and community members gathered on the Quad for a pro-Palestinian protest. Protestors called for the divestment of UC assets in Israel and the resignation of Chancellor May.
“What we are trying to do here today is make a connection between the issue of occupied Palestine and the ultimate goal of ending…complicity through the UC and UCD endowments and investment funds which are invested into companies that are involved indirectly in the occupation and genocide of Palestine for 75 years,” third year law student Stanford McConnehey.
On May 6, protestors established an encampment on the Quad. Their demands now included an academic and cultural boycott, investment in Palestinian and Arab ethnic studies, and full amnesty for everyone involved. According to organizers, approximately 100 students joined the encampment on the first day.
“We want this to be a space where people can engage in speech and assembly around Palestine,” he said.
