Davis High’s women’s varsity tennis team won against Whitney, Aug. 12 with a score of 6-3.

With the new league, this was the first time Davis played against Whitney. “Since we switched leagues, Whitney is a brand-new team for us so we were excited to see how we would perform against them,” junior Grace Lee said. “We will play them for a second time at an away game in October, and I am sure we will do well again.”

Lee has played tennis for about 6 years, and she is excited about this season. “This is [my] first year on varsity; I enjoy the team dynamic and although I have already lost one challenging match, I believe that they will be a competitive team this year,” Lee said.

With the small breezes of wind and heat, it affected the player’s ability to play. Even with those obstacles, Freshman Gianna Ji won the first set 6-1, But unfortunately, the second set had just started when it was cut short as Ji’s opponent got injured. “We played a very good match,” Ji said. Though her match was cut short, Ji showed good sportsmanship by caring for her opponent. “I feel a little bad because we couldn’t finish our match, but I hope she makes a good recovery and rests,” Ji said.

Lee wishes to be able to play a full match next time and will make sure to make some improvements for the next match. “I want to try and stay upbeat as well as consistent and I don’t want to make any inconsistency,” Lee said.
