Davis High’s women’s varsity flag football team fell to the Pioneer Patriots, 6-0, at home on Thursday, September 5th. The game began slowly for Davis, with Pioneer scoring an early touchdown.
Despite the setback, the Devils kept fighting, with junior Sonia Clayton making several key defensive stops by pulling flags.
Davis reclaimed possession but struggled to break through the Patriots’ strong defense. Five minutes before halftime, an interception gave the Blue Devils another chance to score, but they were unable to convert.
At halftime, the score remained 6-0, with Davis down by just one touchdown.
Sophomore Landry Clark, in her second game back from injury, made a long throw that nearly resulted in a touchdown, but Davis was unable to capitalize. In one of their final attempts to tie the game, the Blue Devils couldn’t penetrate Pioneer’s organized defense, leaving the score at 6-0.
Neither team scored in the second half, which remained evenly contested.
The Blue Devils are currently working through some challenges, including filling the quarterback position due to a key player’s injury.
“I think we’re still trying to figure out how we manage our quarterback position,” assistant coach Geoff Hulbert said. “When one of our top players is injured, we are still having to game plan around that.”
Despite the loss, the team remains optimistic as they look ahead to league play.
“We are all very excited about league play starting since we’ve got some big challenges ahead. I think as long as we continue to know our positions and responsibilities and play with energy, we should be fine in league,” Hulbert said.
