Last Friday Sept. 20, the Davis High varsity football team played the Whitney Wildcats during the Homecoming game. Although Davis lost 10-44, the game was spirited and a great opportunity for Davis to adjust to the new league.
“The expectation was that we were going to give it our all and leave it all on the field. I think my team did that both offensively and defensively,” senior JP Baker said. “Of course we went in thinking we would win, but small mistakes add up in the end.”
During the second quarter, with six seconds on the clock, Whitney was a few yards away from scoring another touchdown but an interception by senior Arjun Singh led to an incomplete pass, leading into halftime.
During the second half, Davis earned most of its points. Although Whitney scored three touchdowns, interceptions and tackles from sophomore Brandon Hicklin and senior Ray Keeper stopped them from scoring more.
After Whitney’s second touchdown, Davis got a kickoff return. Hicklin caught the ball off the kick and ran it until 10 yards before the end zone. Junior David Dirksen ran five yards before getting tackled, allowing junior Noah Wittenburg to score a touchdown for Davis.
Sadly, in the last few minutes of the game, Keeper was tackled and suffered apparent injuries.
“I’m looking forward to just being out on the field with my brothers,” Baker said. “I think we played hard and I’m excited for our next game.”
