The varsity baseball team played a close home opener game on Feb. 27, ultimately losing 2-3 against Christian Brothers.

The game began slowly, with both teams protecting the plate and fighting aggressively on the mound. Christian Brothers scored first at the top of the 3rd inning after an error from Davis.

As the game entered the bottom of the 3rd inning, Senior Jackson Moore hit a line drive to center field, giving Davis its first hit.

Continuing their momentum, Christian Brothers scored one more run with two outs in the top of the 4th inning after a throw from the outfield got past Davis’ defense.

In the top of the 5th inning, Christian Brothers got on base with two outs, and after an infield error from Davis’ defense, they returned home to score their third run of the game.

The Devils’ offense responded quickly. Senior Eli Burnham delivered a line drive down to left field for a hit, followed by walks from Junior Max O’Geen and Senior Alex Kieffer, getting the base loaded for the devils in the 5th.

After Senior Evan Lanier was hit by pitch and Senior Aidan Larsen was walked, Davis put up their first two runs of the game, bringing the run difference to just 1.

However, after a long-fought battle, the devils were unable to score.

“You can’t beat yourself,” head coach Ethan Guevin said. “We didn’t execute the fundamentals, especially defensively today.”

Even though this loss was tough, Guevin believes these types of games will prepare the team for a long season ahead.

“We need to put the team in a better spot,” senior Caden Castles said. “We should play with better baseball IQ while having fun, and not play so tight.”
