Davis High’s varsity badminton team took a commanding 15-0 win over Rodriguez High on April 21.
The Blue Devils started off with early momentum, winning every women’s singles match and only going to a third set twice.
Junior Emily Li won her singles match, dominating her first set 21-11 and her second set 21-17.
Li still looks for improvement. “It was a really good game, the other girl was really good,” Li said. “I want to improve my short-court game; I like to play long, but I need to get better at playing short.”
The undefeated Blue Devils have been focusing on a more technique based approach, refining their skills as they approach section playoffs in late May. Junior Kayla Li has embraced the coaching system.
“We’ve definitely been improving,” Li said. “We’re focusing a lot more on technique and less on fitness, (focusing) more on footwork and how to actually hit the birdie correctly.”
After the eight singles wins, the game went into doubles matches. The Davis dominance continued, winning all seven doubles matches.
Senior Nicole Dalal and her doubles partner senior Neha Dalal won both of their sets, 21-7 and 21-9 respectively, and echoed their embrace of technique drills.
“It wasn’t our best game, but we did win. During practice, we do a lot of technique drills and a lot of footwork (which helped),” Dalal said.
