Men’s varsity lacrosse played their home opener and ended with a dominant 14-2 victory over Vintage on Feb. 27.

The Devils came into their first game of the season with strong defensive play, led by sophomore goalkeeper Jack Roberts, who deflected any Vintage shots that came his way.

Senior Jamie MacDonald was the first to get on the scoreboard, scoring a goal with 9 minutes remaining in the first quarter.

Vintage’s goalkeeper made numerous impressive saves, blocking many of the Devils’ attempts on goal.

But Davis turned up the heat in the second quarter. Senior Noah Layiktez set up senior Frankie Woods, who scored with 7:34 left in the second quarter, giving the Devils a 2-0 lead.

Woods and Layiktez’s dynamic play is a result of their tight bond, both on and off the field. “We’ve known eachother since before we played lacrosse, like fourth grade,” Woods said.

Layiktez said their game chemistry feels natural. “We are always coming out here and shooting together,” Layiktez said. “He’s my best friend, so we’re always together so it just kind of happens.”

Layiktez, junior Benjamin Feagle, sophomores Braden Kubiak and Jonah Spang scored as well, and by halftime, Davis was cruising with a 7-0 lead.

The Devils maintained momentum into the second half. An assist from MacDonald to Layiktez, who then set up Woods for another goal, stretched the lead even further with 9 minutes remaining.

Davis continued to rack up points, but their defense let up slightly, allowing Vintage to score twice in the second half.

With a 12-point advantage, the game switched to a running clock. A pass from Layiktez to senior Jackson Chelius, who then assisted Spang for the final goal, sealed the Devils’ dominant 14-2 win.
