The Davis High women’s varsity tennis team defeated the Granite Bay Grizzlies on Sept. 9 by a score of 6-3.

Coming into the match, the Blue Devils knew what they were up against. Granite Bay is known as one of the toughest teams in the league, winning the Sierra Foothill League last year, and this time around, the Blue Devils were without head coach Sally Hosley.

Despite the odds, the Blue Devils fought hard, winning three of six singles matches. Sophomore Gianna Ji faced Granite Bay’s top player and, despite the loss, pushed through long rallies and showed determination. “I think I learned a lot from it, and I got a lot of deuces with her,” Ji said.

Sophomore Lilah Shapiro helped secure the win with a strong singles match, winning, 6-3. “(My opponent) was very good and hit the ball really hard,” Shapiro said. “But I was able to stay consistent and pull through.”

That energy carried into doubles, where Davis dominated, sweeping all three matches.

On Court 5, Davis battled through a close third-set tiebreak and won 6-4, 3-6 and 16-14. “Our doubles really pulled it together,” JV coach Julie Kuo said. “We went to tiebreakers in three of our matches, and we ended up winning all of them.”

With the 6-3 victory, the Blue Devils showed they can compete with anybody this season.
