Davis High’s Blue Devils came up short 49-14 at their annual Breast Cancer Awareness Pink-Out football game on Oct. 17.

The game kicked off at 7:14 p.m., with Davis kicking the ball down the field to Laguna Creek. While crowds were thin at first, more and more people began to arrive sporting pink shirts, hats and gloves, all in support of breast cancer awareness.

Though Davis put up a strong defensive effort through the first quarter, the Cardinals pushed through, gaining a 21-0 lead.

With six minutes until halftime, quarterback senior David Dirksen saw an opening and sent a lateral down the field to wide receiver senior Brennan Bolnik.

Taking this opportunity, Bolnik ran 40 yards to get the first points on the board for Davis. “(I was thinking) just don’t slow down, gotta get there, can’t get tackled,” Bolnik said.

This momentum continued to halftime, holding the Cardinals to only two touchdowns in the second half. “It kinda just starts with team chemistry. I trust my guys; they trust me,” Dirksen said.

Starting the second half, Davis dropped the kickoff catch but quickly recovered it. After a few exchanges of possession, the Blue Devils got their second touchdown of the game. Led by several large passes and rushes from Dirksen, Davis pushed through the Cardinal defense and hit double digits on the scoreboard.

The rest of the game was a defensive battle for Davis, and with a few minutes remaining on the clock, a pass intended for a Blue Devil receiver was caught by a Cardinal defensive player, who ran it in for a pick-six. The game concluded in a loss for Davis, yet the resilient Blue Devils found from it what they could use in the coming week.

“We definitely had a better second half than the first half,” Dirksen said.

Looking forward, Davis will play Cordova High on Oct. 24; being the team’s last home game and their senior night, coach Roscoe Ahn has high hopes for the team. “It should be a good game (…) it’s the last chance for seniors to dress up in blue and hit the field, so hopefully they take advantage of it,” Ahn said.
