Davis women’s basketball secured a win against Atwater High with a score of 77-72 on Dec. 3. This game was a part of their pre-season preparation for the league.

Davis was “expecting the game to be fast and physical,” head coach Heather Highshoe said.

The game started with Atwater securing the first point, putting them up 2-0. However, Davis managed to get back with sophomore Lorelai Nachman securing 3 points.

The game continued with back-and-forth scoring for both teams until Atwater pulled ahead making it 17-9 going into the 2nd quarter.

Throughout the second quarter, the teams continued to alternate possession. However, Atwater began to pull ahead and was able to create an advantage going into halftime with the score at 31-20.

“I challenged them at halftime to just play a bit more physically,” Highshoe said. With this encouragement, Davis was able to build up momentum. Coming out of halftime, junior Emma Killou made a 3-pointer, followed by junior Sailee Fields scoring a 2-pointer.

“The drive to win and just having our teammates cheer us on helped us persevere through the rough moments,” Killou said.

Nachman held the team through the third quarter, scoring multiple times. With only 1:25 left, she dribbled the ball down the court through the opposition’s defensive line, and secured a mid-range shot, upping the score to 43-48.

Davis and Atwater fought back and forth with a slim difference in points. With less than four minutes left in the game, Nachman hit a 3-point fade-away shot to make the score 53-52.

Both teams battled, scoring point after point to end the regulation time tied 64-64. “It was the fact that we knew that we could beat this team that helped us keep going,”  Nachman said.

Immediately into overtime, senior Riley McDonald got fouled and was awarded two free shots, which put Davis up 2 points. Nachman then scored another two-pointer, putting Davis ahead 73-69.

Over the final minutes, both teams earned one more point for fouls. Nachman scored another 3-pointer, ending the game and sealing the win for Davis with a score of 77-72.
