Davis community members gathered on B Street on Jan. 7 to protest the recent shooting in Minneapolis, where an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and killed a woman during an immigration operation earlier that day.
Roseanne Bernardy attended the protest to help spread awareness about ICE and the shooting. Bernardi explained that the demonstration was part of a regularly scheduled event known as the Disappeared in America Protest, which takes place at least once a month.
Although she has only attended a few of the recent protests, Bernardy said she enjoys seeing how the event brings Davis residents together. “Davis tends to be a community of activists, and the practice happening here is not a surprise,” Bernardy said. “It’s important that people know what’s going on.”
One Davis resident, who identified himself as an immigrant and asked to remain anonymous, said he personally knows people who feel under attack because of their immigration status. He expressed particular concern for farm workers who face wage theft and the threat of deportation.
As cars passed by, drivers honked to show support for the protest. Participants responded with chants such as “Hands up,” and “All people belong in Davis.”
During the protest, a car accident occurred on B Street, prompting police officers to arrive and redirect traffic. Protesters took advantage of the slowed traffic by walking through the area, approaching vehicles to talk with drivers and display their signs.
