The Davis High women’s varsity basketball team lost against Rocklin 54-47 on Jan. 20.
Davis secured the first point of the game, setting the score 2-0. However, Rocklin quickly caught up and scored its first three points.
Throughout the rest of the first and second quarter, both teams went back and forth, keeping the score close. Rocklin kept a slight lead, winning the first quarter 16-13 and the second 28-25.
In the third quarter, both teams kept up the fight, making fast plays to get the ball to their side of the court. However, Rocklin was able to get multiple 3-pointers and consistent free throws, which allowed them to quickly gain points and end the third quarter with a score of 40-33.
“They went to the free throw line, and they finished well at the free throw line. So they just executed better tonight overall than us,” coach Heather Highshoe said.
In the fourth quarter, Davis kept up its intensity, narrowing Rocklin’s lead, but Rocklin also maintained its momentum and ultimately ended with the win.
“We could have communicated better,” sophomore Elliot Schapira said. “I also think our defense lacked in the first half.”
Junior Chaya Chiu is proud of the teamwork they displayed. “Even though we went through so much adversity, we still came together as a team,” Chiu said.
Although Davis was not able to secure the win, the team will continue to work hard to improve as the season progresses. “We show (a) fight to the end, which is good, but we just need to put together a more consistent game,” Highshoe said.
