The Davis High varsity women’s soccer team defeated Folsom 1-0 on Jan. 20 in their eighth game in the Sierra Foothill League, securing a hard-fought win halfway through league play.

The Blue Devils dominated possession throughout the first half, creating more than 10 shot attempts while holding Folsom without a single shot on goal.

Close shots from senior Madison Lujan and juniors Faith Haringer and Linh Ramirez kept pressure on Folsom, but strong goalkeeping kept the score 0-0 by halftime.

Davis carried that momentum into the second half with continued attacking pressure, highlighted by multiple shots from Lujan and a close kick from Ramirez.

Folsom found more possession midway through the half, forcing junior goalkeeper Donica Sisco to make an aggressive save on their first shot of the game.

With six minutes remaining, Lujan broke through with a right-footed shot from the left side of the box to give Davis the 1-0 lead.

“We came away with the win and fought for the shutout,” senior Isabella Hazel said. “There’s a lot of positives, but we could always be better.”

Head coach Sarah Stone emphasized the need to take the next step, looking forward to the second half of their season. “Our effort was good, but we need to separate being good from being great,” Stone said. “Once you score against a team sitting back, it opens everything up.”

Senior Aubrey McKlin said the team is continuing to grow as league play progresses. “It’s only going to go up from here,” she said. “We know our opponents better and we’re more connected as a team.”
