Badminton remains undefeated, beats Vacaville 13-2 at Senior Night

On April 23, the Davis High varsity women’s badminton team defeated Vacaville High 13-2 on the team’s Senior Night. 

Prior to the game, a ceremony was held to commemorate the team’s eight graduating seniors. 

Coming into this game, the Blue Devils were on a 46-game win streak over the past three seasons. With this streak, the Blue Devils stood at the top of the league table. Close behind them in the table was Vacaville.

“This is the only team that had a chance to break even and now they cannot,” coach Dan Su said.

The competition started with a round of single matches. Davis won six of the eight matches. Even in the two losses, the Blue Devils were competitive, taking the matches to three sets.

Seventh on the ladder, senior Frida Utomo, won her match in two sets. 

“I felt pretty neutral in terms of my confidence, but I think I still managed to pull out some pretty good shots,” Utomo said. 

After the single matches concluded, the doubles matches began. Davis swept all seven double matches and won all but one of the games in two sets. 

Head coach Chris Lossin credits much of the dominance demonstrated during this match and over the past three years to strong coaching.

“The fact that we have four coaches gives us a great advantage in terms of instruction capacity,” Lossin said. 

Unfortunately for the men’s badminton team, Vacaville did not have a men’s team of its own. So, the Davis men’s players were unable to play in this match. 

“I was disappointed knowing I couldn’t pursue my passion today,” junior Brian Sun said. 

The Blue Devils have two remaining games in the season. 

“We will finish the season with 48 (wins in a row),” Su said.
