Davis men’s tennis defeats Jesuit 8-1 at Senior Night

Davis High men’s tennis defeated Jesuit High 8-1 on Thursday April 23, securing the team’s second place spot in league.

Davis started off strong in all matches, winning their first set within the first 40 minutes. Shouts of encouragement could be heard from parents throughout the match. 

Senior Andy Zhang started off his Senior Night strong by quickly winning his match and coming off the court to take pictures with friends. 

“I really appreciated their support,” Zhang said. “It isn’t easy to sit out in the sun for two hours, but they cheered me on throughout the ups and downs of the match and even surprised me with a senior gift when I won.”

Junior Nason Wessel had a slow start to the first set, but quickly caught up in the second set. Wessel kept a consistent serve throughout the game. 

“I upheld my serve in the second set more, and waited for my opponent to make the error instead of rushing in,” Wessel said. 

Sophomore George Vougioukas won his match, and feels confident moving into playoffs after the team’s victory.

“The win against Jesuit was huge for our team and our mindset going into the playoffs. We solidified ourselves as the (No.) 2 seed and destroyed our longtime rivals,” Vougioukas said. “(Jesuit was) demoted to division two so we won’t have to worry about playing them again during playoffs.”

To prepare for playoffs, the team aims to polish weaknesses during practices. 

“We are going to work on our execution of third set tiebreakers,” Vougoukas said. “One of, if not the most important deciding factor of our matches.”
